Rita came to us on March 11, 2009. She’s a 27 year old registered Standardbred mare that loves children. She is excellent for the beginner child to ride in a round pen where she is most comfortable. Rita is a sweetie that will stand forever to be groomed. Very delicate with children. She would be perfect for that first horse for the smallest child to be led in the round pen. You’d never know that she was partially blind in one eye! Please give Rita a forever home, as she deserves the best! Rita’s adoption price is $200

Rita loves giving rides to children…give her a child, and she’ll take very good care of them. She’ll stop if she feels the child slipping and let them regain their balance. What a wonderful horse!

The Standardbred is considered to be the world’s fastest horse in harness racing. The breed name originated when the early racers were required to meet a standard speed of theree minutes over the standard distance of a mile in order to be entered into the Registry. The breed has been influenced by Spanish Jennets, Morgans, and Clays, but most of all by the Thoroughbred, Messenger.
Foaled in 1849, Hambletonian, a descendant of Messenger, is perhaps the most famous Standardbred even though he never raced. He sired approximately 1,335 offspring from 1851 to 1875. It is estimated that ninety percent of all modern Standardbreds are his decendants. The most prestigious harness race in the United States, The Hambletonian, is named after the famous sire with a guaranteed purse of $1.2 million.
