There’s Not Always a Happy Ending.

100_2025 When we got there, this is what we saw. He was moving and gasping….I had a feeling we were too late.

MAHR got a call on May 17th, 2010 from a concerned citizen about a foal that the mother had abandoned.  She didn’t have any milk.  Probable cause…Fescue grass.  Fescue grass consumed in, especially the last trimester of the pregnancy, usually ends up with dry mares.  No milk.  And since the foal tries to suckle, it hurts the mother and she pushes it away…therefore, leaving the foal helpless, abandoned and unwanted.

100_2027 MAHR volunteers assessed his condition and found it to have a strong heartbeat, but just the looks of him worried us all.  He had been in that barn, all night….alone, scared….and dying.  He had only been born the day before.  The last time anyone had given him anything was 7pm the evening before.  It was 9:45am now.  He’s so weak….so tiny….so helpless.

Why don’t people care?  It’s just a baby.

100_2028 We’ve got to at least try!
