Unwanted Horses – Surrender Program
It is often a misconception that all rescue horses have something wrong with them. We have horses that are surrendered by their loving owners who can no longer provide appropriate care or their children have grown or moving to the city and other various reasons. We also have horses that have come into our care that have serious problems that have to be monitored by our vet. Horses come in that have been abused or neglected and are rehabilitated to be wonderful companions or riding horses.
We provide an alternative to sending a horse to the sale barns where their future is unknown.

We do not charge a surrender fee with the horses as most rescues do, but, we do ask for a small donation towards their care, whether it be feed, hay or money. Your donation will help defray the expense incurred by MAHR for any medical care, feed and basic care of your donated horse.
Horses come to Mustang Alley Horse Rescue, Inc, from many different sources; however, a large number of our horses are owner surrenders. These horses are turned over by owners who can no longer care for them. Surrendering your horse can be a very difficult decision to make, and we respect that. We are happy to answer questions you may have to help you make an informed decision.
Applications to MAHR for owner surrenders are always accepted. However, it is important to understand that MAHR may not be able to accept your horse immediately, if ever.
The 1st responsibility of MAHR is to receive and rehabilitate horses seized by Animal Control Officers in Tennessee and neighboring areas. Space allowing, we will evaluate each surrender application based on available space and the level of need for each applicant.
You have decided that you need to surrender your horse – what now?
The first step in the surrender process is to complete and submit a surrender application. Once we receive your application, we will contact you regarding our current space & financial availability.
You may download and submit your Surrender application on the right hand side under “Forms” and return it completed to MAHR.
We do require that you have a current Coggins test done within the last 6 months, their teeth floated, current on their vaccines, worming and their hooves have been recently trimmed. NO SHOES!!
Please do not allow your horse to suffer because you are too proud to ask for help. We are here to help!
There are options available to you. At MAHR, we will not judge you when accepting your equine into our care. We thank you for allowing us to provide your equine with a second chance at life. We will screen new potential adopters to be sure that they are capable of providing a caring and loving home.
NOTE: IF YOUR HORSE IS ON IT’S LAST LEG, DUE TO SOME KIND OF DE-HABILITATING DISEASE, PLEASE DO NOT ASK MUSTANG ALLEY HORSE RESCUE TO TAKE IN YOUR HORSE. PLEASE DO THE HUMANE AND RIGHT THING AND HAVE YOUR VET PUT HIM DOWN, GRACEFULLY AND WITH DIGNITY. WE NEED THE SPACE AND THE MONEY USED FOR ABUSED AND NEGLECTED CASES.
